Addition of Avastin® to Tarceva® Does Not Appear to Improve Survival in Patients with Advanced Non–Small Cell Lung Cancer (10/06/2008)
According to the results of a Phase III clinical trial, treatment with Avastin® (bevacizumab) plus Tarceva® (erlotinib) did not result in better survival than treatment with Tarceva alone among patients with advanced non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose disease had progressed following platinum-based chemotherapy. These results were recently published in a press release by Genentech.

Bone Marker Associated with Survival in Breast, Prostate, and Lung Cancers (06/23/2008)
The bone marker N-telopeptide of type I collagen (NTX) is associated with skeletal-related events and survival among patients with cancer that has spread to the bone (bone metastases).  Improved outcomes may be achieved by reducing these markers through treatment with agents such as Zometa® (zoledronic acid). These results were recently published in the journal Cancer.

Nexavar® Improves Survival in Recurrent Non–Small Cell Lung Cancer (06/06/2008)
Patients with recurrent non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who were treated with Nexavar® (sorafenib) experienced a delay in disease progression and a possible improvement in overall survival. These findings were reported at the 2008 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Addition of Avastin® Superior to Chemotherapy Alone in Lung Cancer (10/15/2007)
According to an article recently published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the addition of Avastin® (bevacizumab) to Tarceva® (erlotinib) or to chemotherapy improves survival compared with chemotherapy alone in the treatment of recurrent non–small cell lung cancer.

Iressa® and Taxotere® Provide Same Survival in Recurrent Non–Small Cell Lung Cancer (09/06/2007)
According to results presented at the 2007 annual International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), Iressa® (gefitinib) may provide equal outcomes with an improved quality of life compared to Taxotere® (docetaxel) for the treatment of recurrent non–small cell lung cancer among patients who have received one prior treatment regimen.

Lung Cancer Screening with Low-dose Computed Tomography Associated with High Rate of False Positives (06/10/2009)
Individuals who undergo lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) are at a high risk for receiving false-positive results, according to the results of a study presented at the 2009 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Orlando, Florida.

Removal of Ovaries During Hysterectomy for Benign Condition Carries Health Risks (05/12/2009)
Among women who have a hysterectomy for reasons other than cancer, those who also have their ovaries removed have a slightly higher overall risk of death from cancer and heart disease than those who do not have their ovaries removed. These results were published in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Study Assesses Risk of Gastrointestinal Perforation in Patients Treated with Avastin® (05/28/2009)
Gastrointestinal perforation is a potentially serious side effect of the targeted therapy Avastin® (bevacizumab). To explore how frequently this side effect occurs, a study published in Lancet Oncology evaluated information from 17 clinical trials. The results indicate that Avastin users are roughly twice as likely as nonusers to experience gastrointestinal perforation but that the risk appears to vary by Avastin dose and tumor type.
