According to an analysis by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cigarette smoking and exposure to tobacco smoke cause at least 443,000 premature deaths each year in the United States alone. These results, based on data from 2000-2004, were published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
Involuntary and Far from Innocuous: The Health Effects of Secondhand Smoke

There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke, and the evidence of adverse effects on health is incontrovertible. These are important messages from a 2006 report from the U.S. Surgeon General. Fortunately, steps to reduce the exposure of nonsmokers to tobacco smoke are beginning to make a difference. These benefits will likely expand across the lifespan, through reductions in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), ear infections, and respiratory problems in infants and children and reductions in cancer and heart disease in adults.
Differences in IMRT Radiation Doses May Complicate Study Results in Lung Cancer

Differences between the prescribed dose of radiation in intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and the dose that’s actually delivered may make comparison studies in lung cancer difficult to interpret. These findings were reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
